What is causing the Vibration / Humming noise in my Heating Pipes?

Question by Faisal Z: What is causing the Vibration / Humming noise in my Heating Pipes?
I have a problem with my heating system. There is a large vibrating noise coming from one of the pipes. This pipe is connected to a circulator pump that feeds the return water into the boiler.
This pipe itself actually vibrates when the boiler is running. You can actually feel the vibration when you touch it. Then we start hearing large vibration / humming noises in the walls and the baseboards.

Do you think there is problem is?
Is it the circulator pump? Or the check valve?

Additional Info:
It is a forced hot water gas-powered boiler. Laars Mini Therm
This only happens when the boiler is running hot at 170 degrees F and above.
There is bracket to hold the pipes in place. The aquastat is set to correct pressure and temperature.
I recently had a pipe leak which was fixed?
Could this vibration happen happen from locked air?

might be due to expansion when its hot or need brackets to secure it

Q&A: Furnace blows cold air, Help?

Question by Answ3ringM4chine: Furnace blows cold air, Help?
I have a custom built heating system.
The ‘LAARS’ boiler (gas) sits beside the vent and is connected with out-take and in-take water pipes as well as electricity wires.

The system worked perfectly but now:
It seems like once in every hour the system restarts after being turned off by the thermostat (once the house is hot enough) and the air comes out COLD and stays that way UNTIL the boiler reheats the water again.

Almost like there isn’t enough HOT water in the system to maintain the hot Temperature.

Please note:

The intake pipe seem to be a lot cooler than the out-take once the system restarts but it is getting warmer once the boiler is working again – it seems like fresh COLD water is entering the pipes instead of old WARM water.

I do hear the water flowing in the pipes (so the pump does work even-though it could be working PARTIALLY)

What can it be?

1. is it the pump?
2. is it the vent / connection between the pipes through the coil?

IT DOES FEEL LIKE A CYCLELING ISSUE…

Everything worked ok, also i found out that the boiler heat limit exceeded the one allowed on the pump 240F(??) VS 230F.

Thanks!

I’m not familiar with this system, but is it possible you have a leak somewhere and it is taking in cold fresh water to make up for the lost hot water?
Just a thought…

another boiler question….?

Question by declaar: another boiler question….?
when I replace my boiler is there a company that stands out, through my short research I have found 2 companys so far….weil mclain ($ 3,470 105k btu 92% afue) and a laars ($ 1,655 100k btu 82% afue) which one would make more sense and is one anymore dependable then the other?

Best answer:

Answer by Brian M
Weil-McClain is a good boiler, I’ve installed many. More expensive then the Laars but it also has a higher efficiency rating, over time that will offset the higher cost.

You may also want to look into a Burnham or a Lochinvar. They are also both good boilers. If it were me, I would go with the Burnham or the Weil-McClain.

My direct vent fuel oil burning low mass boiler keeps building up soot internally very fast… why?

Question by Semper Fidelis: My direct vent fuel oil burning low mass boiler keeps building up soot internally very fast… why?
I’ve installed a low mass direct vent oil burning boiler (140Kbtu) by LAARS a year ago and twice this year it sooted up so much that it choked itself to the point of burning terribly rich. (thick black smoke out the flue) I’m wondering if it could be my oil, I never had this issue until the last delivery. (This is my second season with this boiler…) I also wonder if using too small of a nozzle can cause this. I’m currently using a .65gph nozzle due to my heating load being relatively small. (Only half of my house is currently on the boiler, I wanted to prevent short cycling the burner.) I opened the fire box and totally cleaned everything from the opening of the flue, clear through all of the internal baffles in the boiler to the intake air line. It was incredibly clogged with soot. Now about a month later, it appears to be in the beginning stages of sooting up again. This morning the boiler locked out, but restarted with ease… but I noticed the black smoke out of the flue again.

Can 1″ PEX tubing be used as a main supply line on a low mass boiler operating at 210 degrees F? (@12 psi)

Question by Semper Fidelis: Can 1″ PEX tubing be used as a main supply line on a low mass boiler operating at 210 degrees F? (@12 psi)
I have a low mass boiler (LAARS Oil Fired 140K BTU) feeding two circuits with airhandler mounted hot water coils. The first airhandler is physically beside the boiler, and already plumbed in with 3/4″ copper… the second is about 75′ away (150′ roundtrip), this is the one I wish to use 1″ PEX tubing for the supply and return lines. I generally run the boiler between 180 and 200 degrees F, but on occassion will reach 210F (max).

i would advise u to search the specs on the pex! we use it all the time on our houses but the water heaters dont produce that high of temp…….also the boiler and air handler should tell u what they want u to use……the “UL Listed” requirements should be listed…….my gut feeling is no u dont want to use this on that high of temp…..

There are several reasons that it might not be working.Let’s start at the beginning. When the thermostat calls for heat, the vent damper opens. Is it open? The next thing to happen would be burner ignition. Do you have a standing pilot or spark ignition. Can you see the pilot? Is the boiler itself cold or warm? If you have a pilot that is burning, If the damper is fully open, and you have a pilot, I would check the gas valve next. Before ALL of this, try the obvious. Can’t tell you haow many calls I have been on where the burner switch was mistakenly shut off, or the batteries in the thermostat were dead.
